Samson Nastapoka

1931–

Samson Nastapoka (1931– ), also known as Sameesa, is a sculptor born at Abraham Nastapoka’s camp near Inukjuak (Port Harrison), Nunavik, Quebec. Samson’s carvings depict hunting activities, camp scenes, family life, and animals. Born the son of Allakarialla, Samson was adopted by carvers Abraham and Meeko (Sarah) Nastapoka. Abraham and Meeko’s other children Johnny, Davidee, and Geela are also artists. Samson’s wife, Nellie Nastapoka, is a craft artist. Beyond carving, Samson spends most of his time hunting, fishing, and working on government construction projects. 

Samson’s work has been exhibited across Canada, and his carvings can be found in the permanent collection at the British Museum, London, UK, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, the Remai Modern, Saskatoon, and the Avataq Cultural Institute, Montreal, among others.
