Yael Brotman
Yael Brotman (1951– ) is a Canadian artist, born in Haifa, Israel, and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She earned a Master of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of English from the University of Manitoba. Brotman’s practice includes installation, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Through her art, she explores temporary shelters, humanity’s desire to build, and the relationship between architecture and the environment.
Brotman collages abstract and natural forms to create fictional structures that integrate architecture with nature. Her training in printmaking, etching, and silkscreen techniques exposed her to the aspects of chance and control in artistic creation, which became key thematic considerations in her practice.
Brotman has participated in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, as well as internationally in Germany, Egypt, China, Poland, Japan, the United States, and Spain. She teaches drawing and painting at the University of Toronto Scarborough and advocates for artists’ rights as a board member of CARFAC.
