Sara Angelucci
Sara Angelucci (1962– ) is a Canadian artist based in Toronto, Ontario, working primarily in photography. Angelucci has a BA from the University of Guelph and an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
She works with found archives, exploring family histories and immigration through the recontextualization of anonymous photographs. In recent photography, video, and audio projects, Angelucci draws from the history of photography, as well as natural and social histories, transforming found images and establishing them within the broader cultural context from which they emerge. Her Aviary series is created from vintage photographs of taxidermy birds melding with human portraits. The series commemorates the extinction of the passenger pigeon, which was once the most populous bird in North America but became extinct in 1914 due to habitat destruction and over-hunting.
Angelucci has exhibited her photography across Canada including the Art Gallery of York University, Le Mois de la Photo in Montréal, the MacLaren Art Centre, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Richmond Art Gallery, and the St. Mary’s University Art Gallery in Halifax. She has participated in artist residencies at the Art Gallery of Ontario, NSCAD (Halifax), the Banff Centre, and at Biz-Art in Shanghai. Her videos have been viewed across Canada and the U.S. as well as abroad, at festivals in Europe, China, and Australia. Angelucci is an Adjunct Professor in Photography at the School of Image Arts, Ryerson University.
