Peter Kasudluak

1906–1982

Peter Kasudluak (1906–1982) was an Inuit sculptor and author born and raised in Inukjuak (Port Harrison), Nunavik, Quebec. Like many sculptors in Inukjuak, Peter was a self-taught carver. Typically made of Serpentine stone, his carvings depicted animals such as seals and ducks. Beyond his sculptures, Peter also authored the two volume Kasudluak Encyclopedia and a number of other notebooks in Inuktitut. These texts explored traditional subjects such as hunting and the use of animals for clothing, food, and general survival during long winters.

His work has been displayed in exhibitions such as Port Harrison/Inoucdjouac on view at the Winnipeg Art Gallery from 1976 to 1977. His carvings are held in a number of permanent collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the McCord Museum, Montreal, and the Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis, among others. His writing is archived at the Avataq Cultural Institute, Montreal.
