Nicholas Wade
Nicholas Wade (1949– ) is a visual artist and art educator. Working in sculpture and installation, his work addresses the relationship between objects, architecture, language, and their connection to different aspects of built environments. His work often includes open or voided forms that emphasize the formal qualities of light, shadow, and space.
Born in Essex, England, Wade immigrated to Canada in 1952. He studied at York University and the Banff Centre, and he obtained an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1981. He has taught in universities across Canada, including Queens University in Kingston, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Brock University in St. Catherine’s, and the David Thompson University Centre in Nelson, British Columbia. Beginning in 1994, he taught in the Art Department at the University of Lethbridge, and he retired after eighteen years in 2011. He currently lives and works between Lethbridge and his home studio located on top of the Niagara Escarpment overlooking Georgian Bay in Ontario.
Wade’s artworks have been exhibited across Canada and the United States, and they are represented in a number of private and public collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, the Nova Scotia Art Bank, Halifax, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Edmonton, among others. In 2000 and 2005, Wade’s work was included in the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton. In 2005, he also completed his first public art commission for the Millennium Library in Winnipeg.
