Nene Humphrey

1947–

Nene Humphrey (1947– ) is a New York-based multidisciplinary sculpture and installation artist. Born in Portage, Wisconsin, her work explores the idea of loss and the neurobiology of emotion and seeks to reveal the beauty in both. The integration of art and science is vital to Humphrey’s practice. Her work often incorporates sculpture, drawing, sound, video, performance, and participatory process art. Humphrey received her MA at Goddard College, Boston, in 1972 and her MFA at York University in 1978.

Humphrey has earned awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Rockefeller Foundation, Brown Foundation, Asian Cultural Council, Dora Maar Foundation, Watermill Arts, and Anonymous was a Woman. Her work has been noted in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Art in America , ArtNews, Sculpture Magazine, and Hyperallergic.

She has exhibited in many cities, including the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio; Mead Museum, Amherst; Palmer Museum, University Park PA, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Sculpture Center, PS1 Contemporary Art Center and the Lesley Heller Workspace, New York.
