Marla Hlady

1965–

Marla Hlady (1965– ) is a Canadian sound artist and kinetic sculptor born in Edmonton. Her work consists of everyday objects that are activated by electronic and mechanical systems to reveal heretofore sonic and poetic properties.

Hlady received a BFA from the University of Victoria in 1987 and an MFA from York University in 1990. She lectures in the Department of Arts, Culture, and Media and is Graduate Faculty in Visual Studies at the University of Toronto since 2016.

Hlady aims to render the emotional, physical, and metaphorical properties of sound by exploring a variety of mediums, including drawings, sculptures, sites, spaces, and videos.

Hlady’s work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Museum London, and among other institutions.
