Margaret Uyauperq Aniksak

1907–1993

Margaret Uyauperq Aniksak (1907–1993) was an Inuit sculptor and artist born inland from the community of Arviat in the Northwest Territories. She began stone carving in the mid-1960s.

Uyauperq Aniksak’s sculptures are naturalistic with carefully rendered details. Additionally, her practice included fabric collage wall-hangings that depict traditional camp life and incorporate caribou skin, sealskin, and beadwork. She is also considered to be Arviat’s leading producer of the soft white caribou suede used in fine clothing and crafts.

Uyauperq Aniksak participated in exhibitions such as Women of the North: An exhibition of art by the Inuit Women of the Canadian Arctic at Marion Scott Gallery, Sculpture/Inuit: Masterworks of the Canadian Arctic at the Canadian Eskimo Art Council, and The Stone Sculpture of Arviat at the McMichael Art Gallery. Her work can be found in collections of the Art Gallery Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Amway Environmental Foundation Collection, among many others.
