Lucassie Tookalak
Lucassie "Took" Tukalak (1917– ) is an Inuit artist born south of Puvirnituq, Nunavik, northern Québec. Lucassie has four siblings, one of whom is an established carver and graphic artist, Isah Ajagutaina Tukala. He was raised according to traditional values by his parents and belonged to one of the most influential families of the region.
Lucassie was a founding member of the Povungnituk Sculptors Society, which was established prior to the current cooperative. He managed the tourist program of Puvirnituq and was responsible for purchasing carvings. Since 1976, Lucassie has focused on creating prints but will occasionally create stone carvings. His work largely depicts hunting and fishing scenes across both media, featuring a bold, graphic quality. Lucassie was selected to represent his community at the Printmaker’s Conference held in Ottawa in 1978. Selected exhibitions of his work include Uumajut: Animal Imagery in Inuit Art, Winnipeg Art Gallery; Art Inuit: Autour de la Collection de Cape Dorset, presented by l'Iglou Art Esquimau, Douai at Centre Culturel Canadien in Paris; and Lucassie Tookalook, Povungnituk, at Inuit Galerie in Mannheim, Germany. Collections of his work include Amway Environmental Foundation Collection in Michigan, USA, the Art Gallery of Windsor, Ontario, and the John and Mary Robertson Collection at Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, Ontario, among many others.
