Lucassie Kumarluk
Lucassie Kumarluk (1921–?) was a sculptor from Inukjuak (Port Harrison), Nunavik, Quebec. Known for his sculptures of birds and fish, his figures are often carved from green stone and use soap inlays to emphasize contrasting details that capture the characteristic features of his subjects. Soap inlays are created by filling holes and incised lines in the carving with soap or other malleable materials.
Lucassie’s carvings have been featured in a number of exhibitions across Canada, including Port Harrison/Inoucdjouac at the Winnipeg Art Gallery from 1976 to 1977. Further, his work can be found in a number of permanent collections, including at the Avataq Cultural Institute, Montreal, the Canadian Guild of Crafts Quebec, Montreal, the Remai Modern, Saskatoon, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery, among others.
