Lise Gervais
Lise Gervais (1933–1998) was a sculptor and abstract painter born in Saint-Césaire, Quebec. Gervais attended the École des Beaux-arts de Montréal to study fine art where she was taught by Jacques de Tonnancour and Stanley Cosgrove and sculpture with Louis Archambault. She was also an art teacher and taught at the University of Québec, Concordia University, and the École des Beaux-arts in the sixties and seventies. Her paintings are associated with the traditions of Automatistes and Paul-Émile Borduas.
Gervais’ first exhibitions took place in various Canadian cities, including Quebec City, Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Chicoutimi, Granby, Sherbrooke, and Ottawa. Her first solo exhibition was in February 1961 at Galerie Denyse Delrue in Montreal, followed by another show at the same gallery and the Moos Gallery in Toronto in 1962. She exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec and the AGO in Toronto. She also had an exhibition in Paris at the Rodin Museum.
