Koomwartok Ashoona

1930–1984

Koomwartok Ashoona (1930–1984) was an Inuit sculptor born in Kinngait (formerly known as Cape Dorset). He is the son of graphic designer Pitseolak Ashoona. His brothers are sculptors Namoonai, Qaqaq, Ottochie, and Kiawak Ashoona, and his sister is the graphic artist Napatchie Pootoogook. He sculpted animals such as falcons, hawks, and seals, among many others. Often sculpted in green stone, Koomwartok’s work melds human and animal forms depicting spiritual transformations.
