Josephie Aculiak
Josephie Aculiak (1910–1968) was an Inuit artist born in Inukjuak (Port Harrison) on the eastern coast of the Hudson Bay in northern Quebec. Josephie carved stone sculptures representative of Inuit ways of life, including carvings of both people and animals.
Following Josephie’s death in 1968, his two eldest sons, Joe Adlaka Aculiak and Johnny Aculiak, took up carving to support their family and both created successful careers in their own right. Josephie’s other children and relatives, including Annie, Davidee, Lily, Daniel, Tommy, and Timothy Aculiak are also all artists.
Josephie’s carvings are held in multiple permanent collections including the Remai Modern, Saskatoon, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Vaughan, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Canadian Museum of History, Gatineau, among others.
