Janet Jones
Janet Jones (1950– ) is a Canadian artist, art historian, and associate professor at York University. Born in Montreal, Janet received her BFA in painting and photography from Concordia University in 1977 and her MFA from York University in 1979. She received the Samuel Sarrick Purchase Award for outstanding studio work upon graduation. Jones is known for her hard-edge abstract paintings, which draw from technological culture, film history, and urban space. Jones merges imagery inspired by sterile public spaces like the lobbies of multinational corporations or hyper-lit passages on the Las Vegas casino strip.
Jones resumed her studies, receiving her Ph.D. in art theory and criticism from New York University in 1988. Her recent projects include: two solo exhibitions, Playtimes, 2015, and Joyride, 2012, both at Katzman Contemporary Toronto. Her work has been exhibited across Canada, England, Germany, France, China, and the United States.
