Harry Kiyooka

1928–2022

Harry Mitsuo Kiyooka (1928–2022) was a respected painter, printmaker, and Emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Calgary. Despite poverty and prejudice, he earned four degrees before age 30 and traveled extensively to study art. His teachings and art influenced generations of artists, with his early works in geometric abstraction and later works aligned with the School of Paris.

Kiyooka served on various boards throughout his career, including the Canadian Conference of the Arts and the Royal Canadian Academy. He was also a founding member of the Calgary Contemporary Arts Society. Kiyooka received numerous awards and exhibited his artwork nationally and internationally. He formed lasting relationships in the arts community and co-founded the Calgary Contemporary Arts Society and Kiyooka Ohe Art Centre.
