Gilbert Marion

1933–

Gilbert Marion (1933– ) is a Canadian painter and printmaker. A member of an innovative group of printmakers from Montreal, Marion was influential in developing and innovating printmaking within the Canadian art world. He is known for his experiments with printmaking approaches, materials, printing techniques, and uses of paper. These experiments set the stage for future experimentation in Canadian printmaking.

Marion studied at the Institute of Graphic Arts in 1953 under master engraver and abstract artist Albert Dumochel. He then continued his studies, graduating from L’École des beaux-arts in Montreal in 1961. In his early years as an artist, he experimented with a range of media including painting, printmaking, and photography.

His work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally in exhibitions such as the Salon de Jeune Peinture in Montreal and the Fourth International Exhibition of Printmakers in Ljubljana, Slovenia, both on view in 1960. His work has also been collected by a number of public institutions, such as the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina, and the Musée national des beaux-arts de Québec, Montreal, among others.
