Gary Taxali

1968–

Gary Taxali (1968– ) is a Toronto based illustrator and artist. He was born in Chandigarh, India, and raised in Toronto, Canada. He is known for his iconic retro-style pop art and illustrations that highlight the insecurities of consumer society with a comical twist.

Taxali draws inspiration from vintage comics and advertising. He employs humour, emotions, and relatable imagery when creating narratives on the banality and idiosyncrasy of everyday life. He uses mixed-media works on paper, sculptures, drawings, and paintings to produce an assortment of graphic design, street art, and fine art. Taxali graduated from Ontario College of Art and Design (now OCAD University) in 1991 and has been teaching there since 2003.

Taxali has worked with major media outlets and publications, including Rolling Stone, GQ, the New York Times, MTV, Fortune, Reader's Digest, The New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly, Warner Bros., LA Times, Paramount Pictures, and other commercial brands. He has also exhibited in many galleries and museums throughout North America and Europe, including Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Jonathan LeVine Gallery, New Jersey; Antonio Colombo Gallery, Milan; and The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh.

Taxali is listed as one of the top 100 illustrators in the world by art book publisher Taschen.
