Ewa Stryjnik
Ewa Stryjnik (1974– ) is a painter and arts instructor who draws her inspiration from her experiences travelling rural Canadian landscapes. Using intuitive painting techniques, her work captures the physicality of the landscape and the spirit of the environment.
Drawn to changing colour and weather patterns, Stryjnik begins her creative process by photographing the landscape. She then works intuitively, using a process of layering colour, impasto, glazes, and printmaking techniques in order to convey the essence of the place. The final product of her painting practice sits between reality and abstraction. The paintings are not simply landscapes, rather they are transformed into stories that simulate the memory of a particular place and create an emotional atmosphere.
Born in Sanok, Poland, Stryjnik became a Canadian citizen in 1994. She obtained a BFA from the University of Waterloo and an MFA from York University in 2000. Her work has been exhibited around Ontario and she is represented by Trias Gallery in Oakville. Beyond her painting practice, she is also the Founder and Art Instructor at Project Art Toronto.
