Anitra Hamilton
Anitra Hamilton (1961–) is a Canadian visual artist known for her conceptual blend of mixed media techniques, encompassing painting, sculpture, and installation art. Born in Toronto, Hamilton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design University and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph.
Hamilton’s work focuses on and engages with issues such as the destructive forces of war and conflicts, concentrating on recurring themes of territoriality, hierarchy, and ownership to examine the history of violence through a perspective of critical skepticism, employing a visual language that fuses abstraction and symbolism in her work.
Her works have been presented in respected events such as the 8th Havana Biennale and the 5th Marrakech Biennale, as well as group shows at The Centre for Contemporary Art Thessaloniki in Greece (2011), at Albright-Knox Gallery (2015), at the Toronto Urban Film Festival (2011), at the Trans-Siberia Art Centre of New York (2011), and held a solo exhibition at Zendai Moma in Shanghai (2008). Her project Wall Parade #3 (2012) was permanently re-installed at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
