Roger Wood

1942–

Roger Wood (1942– ) is self-taught artist who lives and works in a former flower shop in Hamilton, Ontario. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Wood is a collector of trinkets that hold history. After making handcrafted eccentric clocks as gifts for some of his friends, he began making unique clocks full-time in 1999. Beyond clocks, he also uses his collection of antiques and other collected materials to produce assemblages that play with themes of accumulation and juxtaposition.

Wood begins his creative process in flea markets and antique shops where he collects unique trinkets that hold the potential to create the unexpected. Back in his studio, he carefully organizes and catalogues his found objects in a system of hundreds of drawers. Drawn to the whimsical, he constructs his assemblages without a plan. Instead, he works using intuition and the guidance of his hands. Wood never makes the same clock twice as he is always looking for new materials and approaches. Overall, his works embrace the fantastical and allow for a multitude of interpretations. His work has been exhibited across Ontario.
