1920–1968

Paunichea, ᐸᓇᓯᐊ, (1920–1968) was a sculptor and graphic artist in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Nunavut. Her work often depicts birds, fish, and other animals in a whimsical, stylized manner common among Inuit artists. Coming from a family of artists, Paunichea was the daughter of sculptor and printmaker Kiakshuk and married carver Davidee Munamme. Her sons, Axangayu Shaa, Tukiki Manumie, and Qavavau Manumie, are also artists.

Paunichea’s work has been exhibited across Canada, the United States, and parts of Europe. It can be found in collections at the Canadian Museum of History, Gatineau, the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, the Museum of Anthropology, Vancouver, the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, among others.
