David Holden

1970–

David Holden (early 1970s– ) is a Canadian painter currently working in Toronto, Ontario. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Queens University, Kingston, Ontario and a Master of Fine Arts from York University, Toronto. His style incorporates realist figures in nostalgic, often sports-centric representations and he regularly uses motifs from collectable sports memorabilia, like baseball cards.

Born in Montreal and working primarily in Toronto, David has always focused on Canadiana, usually through a nostalgic lens, focusing on the passage of time and how this is recorded and interpreted. He uses his own personal objects and symbols from his past in his artworks, including the names of his childhood friends, Sony walkmans, and early traffic camera footage from the 1990s. Much of his work is site-specific, focusing on iconic or otherwise heavily-populated locations around Ontario and Quebec, including Scarborough, Ontario, LaSalle, Quebec, and various baseball stadiums.

Working mainly independently and commercially, David’s work has been shown across Canada and in the Netherlands. His work entered the collection of York University when he was awarded the Purchase Award from the Schulich School of Business in 2003.
