From the artist: “With The Dead Zone I wanted to tap into the continuum of writing and image-making to think about Western attitudes toward death and dying. This was the beginning of an approach to making and thinking that involves indexing the extremities of a single word or idea. I decided to focus on images from popular culture to isolate and examine the way typography and graphic design exist as a layer of meaning in text which often adds the inflection of terror and dread so often associated with death and dying. Along with examining these extra-linguistic layers, I wanted to see what the buildup of words would yield and how my personal subjectivity is reflected in this death index.”
